# EV battery insurance: what is covered?

Updated 24 September 2026. https://cushly.eu/guides/ev-battery-insurance/

**Short answer:** In the Netherlands and Belgium the high-voltage battery is part of the car, so it follows your cover: WA or BA alone pays nothing for your own battery, WA+ or mini-omnium pays for fire and theft, and allrisk or full omnium also pays for your own fault. Gradual loss of capacity is wear and falls outside insurance; sudden damage and defects belong to insurance or the maker warranty.

## The battery follows your cover level

Insurers treat the high-voltage battery as a car part, not as cargo. Univé says electric cars take the standard car policy, with All Risk the most chosen cover, and the charging cable included from WA+ up. In Belgium Allianz says the battery is covered in full for your own damage under its omnium. So there is no separate battery policy to buy. The question is which cover you bought for the car: [WA, WA+ and allrisk for your car](https://cushly.eu/guides/wa-wa-plus-allrisk/) and [BA and omnium in Belgium](https://cushly.eu/guides/belgium-ba-omnium/).

| Event | Netherlands | Belgium |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Battery damaged in a crash you caused | Allrisk | Full omnium |
| Fire in or around the car | WA+ and up | Mini-omnium and up |
| Theft of the car with its battery | WA+ and up | Mini-omnium and up |
| Storm, hail, animal | WA+ and up | Mini-omnium and up |
| Gradual loss of capacity | Not insured | Not insured |

_Names and details differ per insurer. Your own policy decides._

## Sudden damage is insured, wear is not

A battery that dies in a crash or a fire is sudden damage, and sudden damage is what casco and omnium exist for. A battery that slowly holds less charge is wear. Wear is never a claim, in any cover. NN sells a separate module, EV Accu Zekerheid, for older electric cars: NN says it pays repair or replacement when capacity drops below 70% through an internal defect after the factory warranty ends, and NN puts replacement around €10,000. That module exists because the standard policy stops where wear starts.

## Warranty or insurance: who pays for a weak battery

A defective battery goes to the maker first. Tesla says its Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty runs 8 years, with the mileage cap by model: 160,000 km for Model 3 and Model Y Standard, 192,000 km for Long Range and Performance, and 240,000 km for Model S and Model X, each with minimum 70% retention of capacity as of September 2026. Tesla says a warranty battery may be new, reconditioned or remanufactured, and that the warranty also covers damage to your car from a battery fire even if you caused it.

The 70% line is the maker promise: below it with a defect, the warranty answers; above it, slow loss sits with you. Warranty terms differ by model year, so read the warranty that came with your car before you claim.

## Fire in an electric car

Fire cover starts one step above basic liability. In the Netherlands WA+ (beperkt casco) covers fire, with allrisk adding your own fault on top. In Belgium the mini-omnium covers fire, and Allianz says its omnium also pays special extinguishing costs such as an immersion container. Report fire damage like any other claim: fast, with photos where you can take them safely.

## Total loss: dagwaarde or nieuwwaarde

A car is total loss when repair costs more than the car is worth: NN measures repair against the dagwaarde just before the event minus rest value. Without a value scheme the payout follows dagwaarde, the market value of a comparable car. For new cars many insurers add a nieuwwaarde or aanschafwaarde scheme: Univé includes one year free with WA+ and All Risk, and the Consumentenbond explains when the scheme pays nieuwwaarde after total loss or theft. After the scheme ends, dagwaarde takes over. In Belgium ask which value your contract uses in the first years. Read the value clause before you need it.

> A battery replacement runs high: NN puts it around €10,000. That cost is why All Risk is the most chosen cover for electric cars, as Univé writes.

## Questions

### Is my battery covered under WA?

No. WA and Belgian BA pay the other side only. Your own battery needs WA+ or allrisk, mini-omnium or omnium.

### My range dropped 10% in three years. Can I claim?

No. That is wear. Insurance pays sudden damage. For a defect below the maker limit, check the maker warranty; some insurers sell a separate battery module for older cars.

### Is fire in my EV covered?

Yes, from WA+ or mini-omnium up. Your own fault on top needs allrisk or full omnium.

### What value do I get at total loss?

Dagwaarde, unless a nieuwwaarde or aanschafwaarde scheme still runs on your policy. Read the value clause before you need it.

### Do I get a new battery after a claim?

Not by default. Tesla says a warranty battery may be reconditioned, and insurance pays the policy value. Read what your policy promises.
